ABSTRACT
This report outlines an investigation into the effectiveness of physical activated Lampung
Natural Zeolites (size of -10+20 and -20+30 mesh) in reducing the concentration of Mg++ in
hardening water (the initial concentration of Mg++ in the water was 113.8 mg/lt). The
concentrations (water-zeolites ratio or RZA) used were 30 : 1000 ( RZA 3 %) and 50 : 1000
(RZA 5 %). The investigation was performed at 10 times of immersion i.e. 10, 20, 30, 40, 50,
60, 70, 80, 90, and 100 minutes. The results showed that higher concentration of zeolites in
the hardening water could reduce more ion Mg++. The highest reduction of ion Mg++ in the
hardening water, in general, occurred after the immersion time of the first 10 minutes and
second 10 minutes. The reduction rates of ion Mg++ after the first 10 minutes were 12.98
mg/lt (11.41%), 16.04 mg/lt (14.09%), 25.3 mg/lt (22,23%), and 29.78 mg/lt (26.17%) for the
use of zeolite -10+20 mesh-3%, -20+30 mesh-3%, -10+20 mesh-5%, and -20+30 mesh-5%,
respectively. Meanwhile, after subsequent 10 minutes, the reduction were not significant, this
means that the rate of reduction were slow. However, after 90 minutes, there were no
adsorption of Mg++ anymore.
Kata Kunci: adsorption by zeolite, activated zeolites, hardening water.
